CoE supports Armenia’s path to stability and welfare: Jagland

A solemn ceremony dedicated to the 16th anniversary of Armenia’s accession to the CoE took place on January 26 at the headquarters of the Council of Europe by the joint efforts of the Permanent Representation of Armenia in the CoE and the Constitutional Court of Armenia. The presentation of the book “Constitutional culture: Lessons of history and modern challenges” took place during the event.

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland, President of the Constitutional Court of Armenia, author of the abovementioned book Gagik Harutyunyan, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the CoE Paruyr Hovhannisyan gave speeches at the ceremony.

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland noted in his speech that since Armenia’s accession to the Council of Europe the authorities of Armenia have consistently pursued the policy of applying consistently strengthening CoE’s values in public and social institutions, as well as in the national legislation. Afterwards he added the Council of Europe supports Armenia’s path to stability and welfare and highly appreciated cooperation with Armenia which documents the resolute commitment of Armenian authorities to engage in dynamic dialogue with the CoE.

Thorbjørn Jagland also spoke about the large-scale legislative reforms in Armenia aimed at further harmonization of the laws with European standards. He noted with satisfaction that those reforms are implemented by close collaboration with one of CoE’s specialized bodies, the Venice Commission. The Secretary General of the Council of Europe also highlighted the adoption of the new Electoral Code as a result of mutual concessions by political forces, as well as the vigorous involvement of the civil society in the ongoing legislative reforms.

In the context of strengthening democracy in Armenia, Thorbjørn Jagland noted that thanks to the consistent commitment of the Armenian authorities a real progress is recorded which can be evidenced by the monitoring efforts of the CoE.
