Alarm—Yerevan is in danger: Karine Danielyan

“Yerevan has two main downpour carriers: Getar and Hrazdan. A part of Getar was already closed, however currently it’s almost completely closed, it’s also filled with rubbish. Besides, in the city’s southern part, near Avan, two large carriers have been constructed, some part is built, and the other part is filled with construction waste,” environmentalist Karine Danielyan told 168.am, adding that the climate has become rather unprecedented, and currently, if the temperature sharply rises and the snow melts, the drainage system won’t be able to take that volume of water.

“Moreover, the drainage system is not clean either, and in many parts the ways, by which the water should come to the drainage system, are closed for construction. For this very reason in many parts they are ruined. In this regard, I consider Yerevan is directly in danger, it isn’t insured of downpours,” he said.

The environmentalist said she repeatedly raise the issue in the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Yerevan City Hall, however, she didn’t observe any positive shift.

“We raised the issue, when Getar was closed. In the period of former mayor Beglaryan, there was a situation of flood in Yerevan, and prior to that, when we were touching upon it, they weren’t taking it seriously,” K.Danielyan said.

168.am asked whether she raised the issue in a meeting with Karen Karapetyan and environmentalists.

“No I didn’t, as there were many other issues.” She considers it’s necessary to gather specialists and discuss what should be implemented. The environmentalist stated that the issue is not only in Yerevan, but in other parts of the Republic,

“We had such a precedent in the 90s, when the downpour poured into the tailing dump in Dastakert, and intoxicated water poured into drinking water basin and many cases of intoxication have been recorded. Or the case in Artik, where we were lucky that there were only stone wastes, although it caused much damage, the stones were spread all over the city.”
