Constitutional Coup

Tomorrow 88 Members of Parliament from the “My Step” faction are going to implement a constitutional coup, by committing crimes set out under Article 300 (usurpation of state power) and Article 300.1 (overthrow of the constitutional order) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia.

And so, tomorrow the MPs of the National Assembly are going to adopt a bill on constitutional amendments, through two reviews, in order to terminate the powers of the Constitutional Court Justices, in gross violation of the Constitution and without the consent of the Constitutional Court.

Please note that this is the same bill which last week was harshly criticized by the Venice Commission.

Moreover, according to our sources, the “My Step” faction has already reached an agreement with President Armen Sarkissian; according to that agreement, Armen Sarkissian will not challenge the constitutionality of this procedure, but he is also not going to sign the said bill. Thereafter, the constitutional amendments are going to be signed by Ararat Mirzoyan, the Speaker of the National Assembly.
