Statement by the RPA Executive Body
The Republican Party of Armenia reiterates that the April 5th referendum is unconstitutional, illegal and anti-democratic.
The whole process of initiating a referendum, in its content and procedure, is grossly inconsistent with the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia and the constitutional law of the “Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly”, and the political context of the issue has nothing to do with landmarks for developing a rule of law and strengthening democracy.
The sole purpose of this adventure is to have a docile, obedient Constitutional Court, which will not only leave many real issues facing the citizens of the Republic of Armenia unsolved, but is also another step towards destroying statehood.
The referendum agenda is disruptive. It is an opportunity to distract the public from the most important issues and to hide the failures of the government.
We, taking into account the aforementioned and unwilling to participate in Nikol Pashinyan’s and his political team’s disastrous process of dividing the society again, announce our decision not to participate in the anti-constitutional referendum campaign in any way.
At the same time, we are alarmed that the reaction of the international community indicates that this process is not appropriate for the Council of Europe member state, damages the international reputation of the Republic of Armenia, which will have severe consequences in terms of promoting the national agenda and aggravating regional challenges, as well as weakens Armenia’s position in Artsakh negotiations.
