In Armenia PhD specialists make less money than drivers and guards

“Two days ago it was the international day of science and country like Armenia, which claims to be a science-oriented country, didn’t celebrate anything on that. UNESCO is actively working with governments of various states, including Armenia, to celebrate that day. Moreover, many scientists have sent letters to the Premier and offered to make this day a state holiday,” yesterday mentioned a PhD of math, professor Artur Ishkanyan. He believes that scientists have serious problems in Armenia. There are only 500 scientists but the number should have been 5000. Many of they are leaving the country. They are currently perfectly developing the economies of other states.

“Lofty statements are heard from the highest levels claiming that science is a strategic sector for Armenia’s future. I can remind you of the statement of Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan on September 1 at the State University of Karabakh, according to which the liberation war of NKR is going through science. These are very responsible words,” said Ishkhanyan and added that the Facebook group “We demand increase of science financing” has been for over two years presenting to the government the issues of science. The latter is well informed of the situation. Meetings took place with the president, minister of education and other officials. Moreover in May 2011 the government stated that the science financing will reach the European medium by 2020, which is 1.9-2% of our current GDP.
