If the Attempted Coup was Organized by External Powers, It would Succeed: Hakob Chakryan

“Upon trials of 2006 Erdogan detained hundreds of officers, deprived the army of the possibility to interfere with the internal life of the country. And recently it talks were being circulated on a group established by the detained, which included commanders, and neutralization of the group was being touched upon. They probably intended to stage a coup, as Erdogan didn’t manage to neutralize them,” Hakob Chakryan, Turkologst, told 168.am, touching upon the attempted coup in Turkey. He doesn’t share the opinion that plotters are supported by external powers, “If it was organized by external powers, I think, it would succeed. We touch upon political support. If the plotters had it, the coup would succeed.”

Two days ago a new law has entered into force in Turkey, the law on the staff of the armed forces, which basically, entitles the Government to use army for personal interests.

Expert Armen Petrosyan stated, that naturally, such reflections would be recorded, as traditionally the army with a serious role in that country, which prior to this succeeded to implement 4 coups, couldn’t have obeyed one person, who was leading the country to absolute monarchy. In this regard Hakob Chakryan said,

“If General Staff of armed forces was successfully engaged among coup supporters, then the coup would succeed. The General Staff has been split into coup supporters and its opponents. Accordingly, they were clashing here, i.e. coup plotters were fighting also against the officers, who were against, at the same time fighting against the authorities, the people, as people went into the streets.”

Commenting on whether he observes a threat for a civil war in Turkey, the Turkologist replied,

“Attempted coup, in fact, has foiled. A while ago the Prime Minister mentioned in his speech that the attempt foiled, and they’re controlling it. However, he also called on the people to go to the streets with the flags of Turkey. It’s interesting if plotters have been completely neutralized, and they’re controlling the situation, why did Erdogan call on the people? Basically, not everything has calmed down, either they are afraid of the second attempt. Attempted coup was mainly initiated by General Command of the Turkish Air Force and Gendarmerie General Command.”

Regarding Kurds he stated if coup is recorded in the country, then their condition will be even worse, “The army will be tougher with the Kurds, than civil authorities.”

Regarding the influence of recent Turkish developments on Armenia, the Turkologist stated,

“It won’t have any impact on Armenia, as despite the fact whether the army will come to power in Turkey or it will be a civil authority, those authorities will be a coalition, pro-Islam or social-democrat, it’s the same, the policy adopted by Turkey towards Armenia was hostile and will remain hostile. Throughout last 25 years dozens of governments have changed, however, position adopted by Turkey towards Armenia absolutely didn’t change.”
