Serj Tankian on Donald Trump’s victory

Serj Tankian, Armenian-American singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, poet, and political activist, reflected to the U.S. presidential elections,

“As we all reel from this surprise Trump victory, a few thoughts come to mind:

1) We live in 2 different countries.
The American civil war and conditions leading to it permanently separated the country. A union is not always better when half the country wants to be another country-that’s a divorce 🙂 and despite popular belief slavery wasn’t the real reason the north didn’t allow the south to secede. Industry needed agriculture.

2) It’s all about education stupid! We get the leaders that we deserve. As our investment in education has declined over the years so has our ability to make sound decisions as a society overall.

3) Defensive voting: This whole election became about defensive voting. Those on the left, specifically progressives, held their nose and voted against Trump but the majority of the country voted against “the establishment”. Very few people really voted for anybody directly.

4) The Democratic National Committee fucked up by fucking Bernie Sanders, the only truly populist, smart candidate from both parties. He would have trumped Trump in the elections. Imagine the debates.

Maybe the only consolation is that in the end this is a System and there is only so much room for maneuvering even as President in domestic politics. We can still stick together and resist. As for foreign policy, maybe he will be a libertarian as he has said in the past and devolve from this empirical neo-con direction. Maybe…
