Archaeological excavations in Artsakh underway

“The State Service for the Protection of the Historical Environment” SNCO under Ministry of Economy of Artsakh Republic is carrying out archaeological excavations in the territories of protected sites. From 2005 large-scale archaeological excavations are carried out in Tigranakert, earlier works have been launched in Azokh cave in Hadrout region. In the period of recent years archaeological excavations are also implemented on Karkar, nearby Qashatagh region’s Artsvashen community, as well as Nor Haykadjur community and Amaras monastery in Martakert region, aparaj.am informs.

Based on information provided by “Preservation Service” SNCO of RA Ministry of Culture, Nzhdeh Yeranyan, Deputy Director of “The State Service for the Protection of the Historical Environment” SNCO, said archaeological excavations are carried out upon financial assistance of the Government of the Republic of Artsakh. This year also archaeological excavations will continue in Tigranakert, Nor Karmiravan village of Martakert region. In late 2016 anthropomorphic steles were uncovered in Nor Karmiravan which date back to 1st millennium BC.

He expressed hope that this year they’ll continue study of Azokh cave as well. Works in Tigranakert and Nor Karmiravan will be carried out by local, and in Azokh cave by international expedition groups.
