US condemns detention of hundreds of rally participants in Russia

The US State Department condemned the detention of hundreds of people who organized anti-corruption rally on March 26, reports TASS. The Department said what has happened is an affront to democratic values.

“We call on the Russian Government to immediately release all participants of the peaceful rally,” Mark Toner, Acting US State Department Spokesman, said.

He said the US accepted with trouble the arrest of opposition figure Alexei Navalny upon arrival at the demonstration, as well as the police raids on the anti-corruption organization he heads.

On March 26 several anti-corruption protests were held in a number of cities of Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.

According to the data of law enforcement agencies, more than 900 protesters were detained in Moscow.
