The IYDU calls for the resumption of negotiations under the auspice of OSCE Minsk Group

The International Young Democrat Union (IYDU), global alliance of centre-right youth organisations, calls for a peaceful solution to the conflict of Nagorno-Karabakh.

The IYDU has taken note of the build-up of military personnel to the line of contact and the clashes that have taken place since July, with a significant escalation of violence in the recent days, leading to deaths of military and civilians.

“There can be no military solution to the situation, only a diplomatic one, and this has to be the prerequisite for all future actions. As a first step, we call for immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of troops to the locations they had before 27 of September 2020. As a specific part of this, Azerbaijan must without delay stop its military activities in Nagorno-Karabakh,” says Bruno Kazuhiro, the Chairman of IYDU.

The IYDU calls on all parties to honour their existing international commitments, and
on Azerbaijan to stop its military operation in the area, which is in violation of the ceasefire agreement.

“Return to the negotiation process mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs is the only realistic, peaceful way forward. The conflict can only be resolved through a political agreement, concluded in accordance with international law, more specifically with the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, the 1975 OSCE Helsinki Final Act, and OSCE Minsk Group’s 2009 Basic Principles. The negotiation process should be resumed immediately and without preconditions. The three co-chairs of the Minsk Group have already announced their readiness to facilitate this,” says Juho Mäki-Lohiluoma, Deputy Chairman of IYDU.
