Fresno Armenian Community Breaks Ground on Monument Honoring Monte Melkonian, National Hero of Armenia
A groundbreaking ceremony was held at Ararat Armenian Cemetery in Fresno for a monument honoring Monte Melkonian, a National Hero of Armenia.
The ceremony drew prominent representatives of Fresno’s Armenian community, members of Armenian organizations throughout the United States, and many fellow Armenians. Armenians spanning several generations gathered at the site where a monument will soon rise in tribute to one of the most renowned commanders of the Artsakh Liberation War.
The idea, put forward by physician and civic leader Karo Khachikyan, quickly grew into a community-wide undertaking. Many members of Fresno’s Armenian community joined the initiative, each contributing according to their means. Today, the monument project stands as a collective endeavor built through the shared commitment of the community.
A granite statue of Monte will stand beside the monument to Soghomon Tehlirian. Its stone-clad pedestal, designed to resemble a rugged rock formation, will evoke the Armenian homeland, while inscriptions in Armenian and English will introduce visitors to Monte Melkonian’s life and military legacy.
Monte was killed in action on June 12, 1993. In the collective memory of the Armenian people, his name remains synonymous with personal courage, discipline, and unwavering devotion to the homeland.
Through this monument, Monte’s name and legacy will reach even those who never knew him in life – those who must still come to understand the price of the path he chose.
