Krzysztof Zanussi at “Personnel Office N168” (Exclusive): “Seventh Seal”
Krzysztof Zanussi, Polish director, awardee of film festivals of Venice, Cannes and etc., this week proposes 168.am readers to watch “The Seventh seal” by Ernst Ingmar Bergman, which Bergman himself considers his best creation and favorite movie. Krzysztof Zanussi thinks, from the standpoint of cinematographic literacy the film is among the must-see.
The film was shot in 1957, at Svensk Filmindustri film studio, based on motives of the director, in a short period and with a small budget. Max von Sydow, Gunnar Björnstrand , Bibi Andersson and others are starring in the film.
“Seventh seal” is about a knight, who with his ally returns home after lasting Crusade invasions. The knight is tired and disappointed with everything, and wants to understand the meaning of life and found out whether God exists or no. He wants to frankly perform a deed. On his way death visits him, who wants to take the knight with him, however, that latter starts playing chess with the death, on condition, if he wins the death, the latter will set him free. Deadly plague spread over the country, which takes lives of hundreds. Some were getting mad and waiting for the end of the world, others were simply surviving.
