The freest citizen of Armenia

Tomorrow, on February 2 is the birthday of the leader of a Pure Blood party Shant Harutyunyan, who was arrested last November 5. In order to celebrate that, the relatives and family of the political prisoner have gathered in the Liberty Square. They have named the rally “Pour some wine” and by doing so they are showing their support to him. Many have considered Shant Harutyunyan’s actions of the last year imbalanced and tense, which have risen after Armenia’s decision to the join the CU.

But the next months showed that Shant’s struggle was the most important one in the current conditions and is aimed against the colonialism of Russia. This was a struggle, which many of our opposition politicians wouldn’t even dare to speak of. In general we can say that the actions of Shant kind of resembled the actions of the protesters in Maydan Square in Ukraine. In a general sense, the people who have gathered in Maydan square are exactly struggling against what Shant was struggling. Moreover, Shant would declare that they would use Molotov’s cocktails during the rally but they didn’t do so unlike the Ukrainian case.

In Armenia’s case Shant was arrested only a few steps were taken towards freedom but in Ukraine there are only a few steps left for the government to give in. Shant was the only person who stated that he would reach freedom at any cost. And today even in isolation Shant is freer than the key-holders of the prison and government members. We would like to say happy birthday to Shant Harutyunyan and we wish that he became not only the freest citizen of Armenia ideologically but also physically.

We wish that Armenia became the country where Shant strived to live in. In the current conditions perhaps this sounds a little crazy for Armenia as Shant would be considered for many others. But if the idea of having a free and sovereign state is crazy then Shant was the craziest citizen. It was his cautious choice. He preferred craziness to servitude…
