Vadim Dubnov: “Ukraine was Putin’s personal defeat”
The logical outcome of the revolutionary processes or over three months in Ukraine was toppling of the government of president Victor Yanukovych. As we know, he has run away from his country. This is another issue that Ukraine’s territorial integrity is in a real danger now. As it is known the parliament of Ukraine has already appointed an acting president for Ukraine and the elections of the new president will take place on May 25.
The political analyst of Moscow’s “Novosti” news agency: Vadim Dubnov, in an interview with “168 Zham” talking about the Ukrainian crisis, said that the toppling of Yanukovych wasn’t a big surprise: “What happened is a quite logical process because Yanukovych has been long ago warned that he must not rule in Ukraine as they do in Russia. This is a different country with other political traditions.”
The analyst didn’t agree that Moscow was defending Yanukovych. In his words, Moscow was very cautious to the regime of Yanukovich, because as any other Ukrainian president Yanukovych couldn’t afford playing a unilateral game.
On the other hand, he added: “And if you are speaking about Maidan then of course Russia wanted Yanukovych to quelled this uprising. But it wasn’t connected with the support with Yanukovych. Russia is very jealous to its neighbouring countries, including Armenia. If in the case of Armenia Russia succeeded to convince him to stay in the Russian orbit, then in the case of Ukraine this matter has always been a complicated challenge. It’s another question, that we don’t know why does Russia need Ukraine to stay with him, his perceptions about benefits from Ukraine are quite abstract. The problem is that this kind of politics by Russian authorities is more directed to the domestic audience: Russian government is doing everything not to lett the Russian citizen to know that this uprising against Yanukovych was a an uprising against corrupt and inadequate governance. The Russian society should never realize that the uprising started because the people were tired of the leadership of Yanukovych. The Russian society is supposed to consider this a fascist curfew organized by the West, which does not wish any good to Ukraine. This is the scenario they are using to hide the actual defeat of Putin in this game”.
“Ukraine was not the defeat of Russia (not by any means); Ukraine was Putin’s personal defeat, the defeat of his virtual politics”,- said Mr Dubnov.
To the question as to what extent the revolution of Maidan can affect on the Customs Union and all the other projects planned for the region, the analyst responded: “I am afraid that if the prediction for Armenia isn’t so favorable because Armenia has once paid for the uprising of Ukraine. I think now Russia will increase its pressure on its allies and neighbouring countries. Armenia will be more involved in integration projects and I have a big fear that Armenia can not withstand that.”
