Why is Tsarukyan ascribed as opposition?
Recently the water service to Ararat Cement factory that belongs to PA chair Gagik Tsarukyan was ceased. But it was fixed in a day. This step is already labeled as persecution of the business activity of Tsarukyan, which they believe happened when the PA criticized the RPA in its party congress.
Nobody has any doubts that the government is able to do something like and moreover it even uses its levers to do so. And the PA has suffered some of the consequences of these levers in the past. But the party does its best to rehabilitate from its current situation. It is more interesting to learn why the government have decided to do so if they did. Or maybe it has some hidden covert agenda. It would be really simple and crude to conduct political persecution against Tsarukyan with these methods. It might even look ridiculous if I may.
This methods would be equivalent to the possibility if the government released a statement by saying they are starting political persecution against Tsarukyan on this day at this time. The impression is that the government had an objective to intensify this topic and show as though they are persecuting Tsarukyan by cutting the water of the factory. It would be quite understandable if the PA members did this to make noise. But the RPA members have also been actively involved in these discussions.
Seemingly, the government is more interested in building a label of persecuted leader and victim for Tsarukyan. It is not hard to assume why the government would want to politically make Tsarukyan a hero. Despite the so-called quiet situation in the country but it is pretty hectic in the world and any spark can create a big wave of discontent in the country and uprising. The government needs to control the potential public discontent.
So the government cannot let any random oppositionist take on the role of a leader of keeping people on the street. They need to have a controlled leader to maneuver in the political field. The government is cautious about anything that would threaten its stability and might cause a threat to the course of joining the Customs Union. Let’s agree that in this regard Gagik Tsarukyan is an ideal leader for street leader. He criticized the government in general without mentioning names and his opinion about the Russian course is wordless. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the government is dreaming to see Tsarukyan is a so-called street opposition leader especially when it might have certain threats in line of Kocharyan’s return.
Tsarukyan is kept in the reserve in case if even theoretically the events of Ukraine might move here. But in order to be more sincere the government and PA should answer what was Tsarukyan doing next to Serzh Sargsyan during the opening of Pan-Armenian games, only hours after the cut of water in Ararat Cement.
