Suren Zolyan Opens the Brackets: In the 1990s Azerbaijan non-Officially Proposed to Renounce NKR for 5 Provinces
“Azerbaijan doesn’t set an issue of returning 5 provinces, it has adopted quite a different strategy,” Suren Zolyan, former rector of Yerevan State Linguistic University after V.Brusov, Doctor in Political Sciences, told at today’s press conference.
He opened some brackets stating that in late 1990s Azerbaijani officials said, “We give up Nagorno Karabakh, however, those provinces are an issue of honor, we can’t withdraw them. Give those provinces and we won’t do anything against Karabakh.”
“I reproduce what was non-officially told to the people, who had those liabilities. Naturally, we were saying you’re not able to give such promises, as you can’t say what the followers will say. In any case, as of today Azerbaijan sets a different issue, waiting for Armenia to weaken, and it’ll be able to take everything without feeling constrained from any agreement. I haven’t heard yet that Aliyev has set an issue to return those provinces,” S.Zolyan said.
Reflecting to the fact that Russia intends to deploy its peacekeepers, S.Zolyan stated that he read it in Armenian press. According to him Russia today isn’t in the condition to have such plans, “Maybe it intends, however, now Russia is hardly settling its issues in Syria. The idea, that they’ll urge Armenia to concede some territories then will deploy peacekeepers, is a bluff. Even if Russia has such intention, it’s simply an intention. Currently it’s not in the condition to implement it.”
According to the speaker, some political and social organizations activate and say “president, don’t concede” and prior to the elections the president comes and says “not a single inch,” “And we all say, look he was able to confront Putin’s pressure.” According to Zolyan at the moment there is no any serious process, what goes on, simply has a cosmetic nature.
