If Permanent Council has resolved, Armenia will assume CSTO secretariat in St. Petersburg: Yevseev

“Lasting disagreement around the candidate of CSTO Secretary General would be a big strike on the image of CSTO,” Vladimir Yevseev, Russian military analyst told 168.am, reflecting to CSTO Permanent Council’s decision on “CSTO Secretary General”, pursuant which upon CSTO rotation order the next country is Armenia, accordingly, the next CSTO Secretary General will be the candidate form Armenia.

It should be noted, that CSTO press secretary Vladimir Zaynetdinov informed, that the draft should yet be introduced to the member countries for ratification. The draft will be discussed at CSTO summit. Decision was made during the CSTO Council session in St. Petersburg in 2016 that the summit will be held in April 2017.

Yevseev stated that the decision-making was postponed as a result of well-known discordances and interest clash, which succeeded to solve judging from the fact of passing the decision. According to him if there is a decision, it’ll be ratified during the summit to be launched in St. Petersburg, as it has been initially approved, which means CSTO member countries came to a compromise in this issue.

“The point is that lasting disagreement would be a big strike on CSTO’s image, which isn’t so high on account of different, from time to time contradicting interests of CSTO member countries.

However, in all likelihood, the countries having fear hinted, that CSTO Secretary General will implement the functions not making use of the position to involve CSTO in NK conflict settlement process, as it isn’t the affair of CSTO.

As I have repeatedly stated, CSTO can make a decision: if applied by Armenia, it may interfere with threats to Armenia, toward its borders. If you remember, Bordyuzha reflected to the act of sabotage on Armenia-Azerbaijan border, which CSTO never did before, in particular, when the incident recorded under unclear circumstances is meant, i.e. there is desire to review CSTO’s activity, introduce some nuances,” Yevseev said.

The latter didn’t exclude that in St. Petersburg CSTO member countries won’t again come to a conclusion around the candidacy of CSTO Secretary General.
