Armenia’s NSS uncovers illicit currency exchange trade of Iranian nationals

The National Security Service of Armenia uncovered illicit currency exchange and business operations carried out by Iranian nationals. The National Security Service told three Iranian citizens had acquired 6 units of POS terminals from the Iranian banking system, have installed them in rented locations in various parts of Yerevan and attached them to their accounts in Iranian banks through the internet.

Afterwards, they were engaged in a illicit currency exchange trade by trading currency to USD or AMD in Yerevan from Iranian businessmen or tourists, from the latter’s bank cards which were designed for local Iranian use only. The National Security Service said over 580 million drams of transactions have been carried out during 2016-2017 in this illicit business operations.

During the investigation, one person involved compensated the damages and charges against him were dropped under Article 188. Instead, he was charged for illicit currency exchange operations. Two other Iranians were also charged.
