“Microbes: Biology & Application” International Conference 2019

“Microbes: Biology & Application” International Conference held at the Scientific and Production Center “Armbiotechnology” of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia in Yerevan from October 9-11, 2019 was organized by the Armenian Microbiological Association (AMA) joint with the SPC “Armbiotechnology” NAS of Armenia and sponsored by FEMS (Federation of European Microbiological Societies) and VIPECO Armenia.

The aim of “Microbes: Biology & Application” International Conference was to present the latest scientific achievements in the field of Microbiology in the light of practical needs and the prospective use for promoting the cooperation between academics, researchers and scientists. The Conference covered such important topics as Microbial Ecology, Environmental Protection, Waste Management, Biosafety and Health, Biofertilizers, Food Safety, New Biotechnologies.

Event Organizer Dr. Arevik Vardanyan opened the Conference. She welcomed all guests, participants and colleagues and expressed her gratitude for joining “Microbes: Biology & Application” International Conference 2019. She introduced Director of the SPC “Armbiotechnology” NAS of Armenia, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia, Prof. Dr. Ashot Saghyan who welcomed the participants of the Conference. He talked about the establishment of the SPC “Armbiotechnology” NAS of Armenia, its scientific activities and small scale productions of the Center. At the end of his speech he encouraged young researchers to be active and not to miss such opportunities for collaboration and career advancement.

Next up was AMA President, FEMS Delegate Dr. Narine Vardanyan. She welcomed all participants and wished fruitful and successful activities.

Dr. Inga Bazukyan from Yerevan State University opened the 1st session. The next speaker of the session was Dr. Jintu Dutta from Indian Institute of Technology Guawahati, India. Before starting the 2nd session AMA president, FEMS Delegate Dr. Narine Vardanyan delivered her talk about FEMS and AMA. She presented the prospects for young researchers as members of FEMS and further opportunities for promoting scientific career. Associate Professor, Dr. Astghik Pepoyan from Agrarian University opened the 2nd session. Dr. Marine Balayan from the same department continued her talk. Prof. Vehary Sakanyan from France, Nantes University closed the session. The 1st day of the Conference ended with coffee break and poster session where the plenary lecturers evaluated the poster presentations.

Deputy Director of Science Research Institute of Biology and Director of the Innovation Center for Microbiological Biotechnology and Biofuel Dr. Karen Trchounian opened the 2nd day. Associate Professor of the Chair of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology of YSU Faculty of Biology Hovik Panosyan and Dr. Armine Margaryan delivered their lectures. Dr. Srdjan Stankovic from Serbia (Center for Metallurgy, Institute for Technology of Nuclear and Other Mineral Raw Materials) delivered his presentation about “Acidophilic bacteria: biodiversity, metabolism, ecology and application”. Session IV “New Biotechnologies” started with the presentation by Dr. Ioana Popescu from Romania (Materials Science Department Transilvania University of Brasov).

She talked about Antimicrobial activity of biosynthesized metallic nanoparticles. Dr. Arthur Hambardzumyan from the SPC “Armbuiotechnology” NAS of Armenia, Dr. Vladimir Akimov from the Russian Federation, Yanina Delegan from Federal Research Center “Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences” delivered their speeches. The 2nd day of the Conference was finished by the evaluation of the next part of poster presentations.

The 3rd day started by the oral presentation of Researcher at the Laboratory of Alternative Energy Sources of the SPC “Armbuiotechnology” NAS of Armenia, Narine Kalantaryan. AMA president and FEMS Delegate, Head of Laboratory of Metal Bioleaching of the SPC “Armbuiotechnology” NAS of Armenia Dr. Narine Vardanyan delivered her scientific presentation about “Bio-recovery of metals as an alternative ecotechnology: trends and development”.

The organizers summed up the Conference with closing remarks and presented the winners of Poster Presentation. Munavvara Djuraeva from Tajikistan received the 1st prize, the 2nd prize went to Lusine Matevosyan from Yerevan State University, the 3rd prize was shared with Massimiliano Chetta from Italy and Jakhongir Alimov from Uzbekistan. Early career scientists (ECS) grantee Sahjahon Begmatov from Russian State Agrarian University received a special prize for his active participation in this Event.

Certificates were handed to all participants and a group photo was taken to reflect the moments of a 3-day scientific party. The day was finished by a scientific excursion to VIPECO AM (Armavir Region, Voskehat Village, Armenia) where participants got acquainted with the production of yeasts and microbial preparations.

Summarizing, it should be highlighted that this Conference was to exchange scientific ideas and to strengthen cooperation between scientists from Europe, Asia, Africa and Armenia, as well as to identify the condition and direction of development of scientific relations in the field of Microbiology and the challenges and problems associated with their implementation.
