EU Discusses the Issue of Supporting Armenia in Integration of Armenians in Syria: F.Mogherini in Yerevan
“Previous year was crucial from the perspective of Armenia-EU relations,” Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, told reporters today, concluding her visit to Yerevan.
F.Mogherini state, that during her intensive visit to Armenia she met RA President, Minister of Foreign Affairs, political parties represented at the National Assembly, as well as highly active representatives of civic initiatives. According to the European diplomat, previous year was crucial from the standpoint of Armenia-EU relations, as it was significant by negotiations launched in December as well. In her words, today they touched upon frameworks of Armenia-EU ties. However, in her conviction, it’s highly important that wider society was a part of this process.
Federica Mogherini stressed, that they intend to be good partners, that excludes competition, and etc. “In these difficult time for the European Union, Armenia’s first trade partner, the first investor, the first grant partner is the EU. However, we don’t only speak of money. It’s noteworthy to stress democracy and rule of law, fight against corruption, protection of human rights and fundamental liberties, constitutional and legislative amendments and reforms. Special attention is attached to Electoral Code amendments and this should be implemented by participatory format,” F.Mogherini said.
She also stressed, that the EU supports OSCE-ODHIR report. If fraud confirms, then, in her words, the referendum will be a missed chance. Mogherini told that Armenia should exert efforts to provide progress of mobility and human right amendments. Following her, the EU support is also of utmost importance. According to the EU High Representative regional issues, possibility of cooperation between Iran and Syria have been covered. “The EU discusses the issue of supporting Armenia on account of the EU reserve funds,” she said
