Yerevan Developments will Definitely Postpone NK Conflict Discussions: German Analyst

“The Armenian side should use the dormant phase of negotiations on NK conflict peaceful settlement to solve internal discordances,” Uwe Halbach, expert at German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), told 168.am, touching upon the developments in Yerevan and negotiations on NK conflict peaceful settlement.

Uwe Halbach attached attention to the circumstance that presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan were to meet in July in Paris, however, as further developments  showed, that meeting has been cancelled and information was spread that the presidents will meet in August in Russia. However, according to the German analyst, these programs have also been failed, as today the Co-Chairs touch upon exerting efforts simply to organize a meeting. The German analyst also stated that instead of trilateral presidential meeting this month Russia’s president will conduct negotiations with presidents of Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, then Armenia.

“At the moment Putin is busy formulating a trilateral format with Iran and Azerbaijan, attempting to settle its relations with Turkey as well. Naturally, due to these projects Azerbaijan’s importance raises for Russia. Armenia appeared in the focus of not so favorable regional developments, in particular, when programs to settle the conflict are being set forward, which instigate discontent of the society,” Uwe Halbach said.

In his conviction, however, for the time being developments in Yerevan and claims circulating in Yerevan maybe will draw back content negotiations, as Serzh Sargsyan can reason that at the moment concessions by the Armenian side will raise a serious wave of discontent, and currently it’s impossible. “Thus, on account of this, I may suppose that during the forthcoming Sargsyan-Putin meeting those issues, internal Armenian developments will be touched upon. Accordingly, probably anything new shouldn’t be anticipated from that meeting,” German analyst Uwe Halbach said.

According to him, however, this process should be observed by the Armenian side for the development of public discourse, consensus and drawing conclusions from Yerevan developments.
