Welcome to the Funeral of Democracy: How the reception of Ursula von der Leyen and Other European Officials went on

Today, the 8th Summit of the European Political Community is being held at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan.

The authorities of the Republic of Armenia have imposed extensive restrictions across the capital, effectively paralyzing the city and significantly limiting citizens’ freedom of movement. Measures have also been taken to prevent summit participants from witnessing protest activities, public expressions of discontent toward Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, as well as broader civic resistance and messages directed at European officials, who are criticized by demonstrators for perceived double standards.

Notwithstanding the considerable restrictions and disruptions throughout the city, various protest actions are taking place in the vicinity of the Sports and Concert Complex, reflecting the views and concerns of Armenian citizens regarding the ongoing developments.

In this context, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was not anticipated to receive a particularly warm reception.

Protest participants welcomed her with banners bearing the message: “Welcome to the Funeral of Democracy.”

Photographs from various protest actions are presented below.
