Canadian Food Products Presented to Armenian Consumers

On July 30th, 2022, the Canadian Embassy in Moscow, in cooperation with truLOCAL Inc. meat trading company and MOONFISH LTD seafood & fish trading company from Canada organized a presentation event of Canadian food products and their high qualities at Mayrig restaurant in Yerevan.

Food products presented at the event included Canadian seafood, meat, dairy and pulse products, ice wine and maple syrup among others.

Due to cooperation with Mayrig restaurant in Yerevan the organizers had made a special menu for the day that used Canadian ingredients to serve Armenian tastes and dishes.

The event hosted representatives of restaurants, hotels and importers, who tasted the Canadian menu and met Canadian companies to discuss development of business and imports of Canadian food products.

The guests were honored by the presence of Pascale Julien, Counsellor and Consul at the Embassy of Canada in Moscow, and Marina Fomitcheva, Trade Commissioner.

Canadian Menu with Armenian Tastes

“We have tried to give Armenian tastes to Canadian ingredients and products that were brought to Armenia for this purpose. I “Armenianized” the dishes to give them tastes that are closer to local ones,” says Anna Hambardzumyan, Mayrig restaurant’s chef, who had made a Canadian menu special for that day.

Dishes served included soup from Canadian yellow split peas, salads from Canadian lentils and kale, as well as other dishes made from other pulse products brought from Canada specifically for that event. MOONFISH LTD provided Canadian cold-water shrimps, which were used to make paella with Canadian seafood. Dairy products were provided by Lactopur Inc. dairy trading company, which were used to make deserts.

High Quality Taste of Canada

Jamie Fox, Minister of Fisheries and Communities of Prince Edward Island addressed the participants with a message sent for that event, in which he highlighted the high quality and exceptional tastes of Canadian lobster, scallops and oysters from Prince Edward Island, and expressed hope that the taste of Canadian seafood will make the participants think of high quality when tasting Canadian seafood.

“Canadian seafood is known for its high quality, and today we will sample cold-water shrimps, which are harvested in cold waters in the North, from deep waters where the environment is pure. These shrimps have sweet taste and hard texture, which I believe Armenian consumers will like a lot,” says Mary Hovhannisyan of MOONFISH LTD seafood trading company.

Kamo Mayilyan, trader from Toronto who works with Armenia for more than eight years, showed a PowerPoint presentation to participants, focusing on meat, fish and seafood, dairy, pulse products and ice wine from Canada. “The fact that countries such as Japan are permanent buyers of meat and seafood from Canada is a proof of high qualities and standards behind the products that are exported from Canada,” he said.

Canadian Clean Environment and Climate Have The Best to Offer

As guests were sampling Canadian ice wine, the presenter showed pictures from Niagara region where ice wine is made and said that it is due to the clean environment and special climate conditions that Canada’s ice wine is considered the best in the world.

Guests also sampled deserts topped with Canadian maple syrup.

“Tourism is developing in Armenia, and with every month we see more new and high end restaurants and food service providers, but unfortunately not too much of diversity of food products and not enough selection of higher quality products. I hope this event will change that, and soon we can see more Canadian products on Armenian shelves and in menus,” said Kamo Mayilyan.
