Ambulance doctor needs help

Doctor Armen Mkrtchyan would never think that he would do his duty of saving lives on the account of his own life. Armen is an army doctor, who was dismissed from army as a result of catching 3rd grade hypertony sickness after 15 years of service in army border headquarters.

Six months ago he was transferred to serve at the ambulance service, which became fatal for him. On April 19th, during his shift in Nubarashen community his crew received a call and they visited a patient on Artsakh street. “Armen does not remember anything about that day. What I know is the information we received from the investigation body and his colleagues,” says his wife Hasmik. There have been media publications about a tragic incident on Artsakh street involving doctor Armen. According to media reports, on April 19th a Mercedes vehicle crashed into an ambulance vehicle, resulting in the death of the driver of Mercedes and hospitalization of the doctor and nurses in the ambulance. Doctor Armen received fatal injuries and was left on the ground for a long time after the incident as people thought he had passed away.

“At 11:30p.m. the Mercedes was driving in the dark with the lights off, and as it was in the apposite direction and was driving fast, it crashed into the ambulance vehicle. The dirver of the Mercedes died in the accident, and the doctors were taken to hospital,” says Hasmik. Armen asked Hasmik to tell the story as he was unable to bring his thoughts together and speak. Armen underwent multiple surgeries as he was in extremely dangerous condition.

A long time has passed since the incident, and as doctors were unable to do more for him, they sent him home and recommended to go through a rehabilitation procedure. He is disabled now and is able to make several steps only with crutches. The right part of his body is weak, and some organs are dead.

Armen says he would prefer to die as he understands the future of his three teenager children depend on him. Armen asks himself every day what will happen to his children and asks God to take his life. Currently they live with the money their relatives give, but the future of his children is unclear as they are not certain about his final treatment either.

Armen is an army officer without home, and is registered in the list of apartments that the ministry of defense gives to army officers. “We used to rent an apartment. As Armen was working, we were able to pay the rent and take care of other expenses. After the incident we are in a deadlock. On the one hand, we have to pay the bills, and on the other hand, we have to survive without income. We receive Armen’s 44.000 dram social payment and give it for the apartment rent. We cannot pay our living; Armen’s medicines are so expensive! I am going mad already,” says Hasmik, Armen’s wife. Hasmik has applied to the social protection office for receiving payment, however, they requested so many documents that it will take a long time from Hasmik to become eligible.

Armen’s wife, a mother of three children, has applied to parliamentarians, wealthy people and others to ask them help his husband undergo treatment abroad. She says any of them could be in her husband’s place. She has not received any feedback yet. “We are in the worst situation now, believe me, we are unable to do anything; we are asking officials, parliamentarians and wealthy people to help us, otherwise we all, including our children, will be lost. Do you understand that he has saved lives in hospital and army but now nobody gives a hand to save his life? If he does not undergo rehabilitation treatment, he will be wrose and we will not be able to do anything. What about my children, his young life? It happened in service and nobody is free of such risk,” says Hasmik and adds that after some rehabilitation treatment at Red Cross hospital, they were recommended to get treatment in Germany. “I am not begging for money; it happened in service. He is the only person at home that works. Do something to save him as we all depend on him,” says Armen’s wife. This family has not received any feedback from the ambulance department of the city hall or the mayor’s office either. Hasmik is going to apply to the defense minister asking to provide the money of the apartment they could possibly be eligible for as they want to spend that money on Armen’s treatment. “Please help us. My children’s future depend on my husband’s life. We are growing three soldiers, this is human life and could happen to anyone, it was an accident and no one is secured of such risks,” says Hasmik, who listens her husband begging for death every day.
