Starmus Announced on Stephen Hawking Medals for Science

Granting of innovative award after world-famous great scientist of the century Stephen Hawking recently was announced in London’s Royal society. The award will be granted to those helping to foster publicizing of science in different fields, like music, art and movie. It’s a crucial award for all those spreading science through art.

Every year three medals will be granted during Starmus festival to be launched in Tenerife. It will be granted to those publicizing science from the following three fields:

• Scientific
• Art
• Cinematography.

During the award ceremony, in London Royal community Stephen Hawking introduced his vision, saying: “Publicizers of science, including everyone, starting from pupils to political figures and pensioners, bear science just in the heart of everyday life. This has its influence on me, on you and the whole world. Accordingly, I’m very glad to support and respect work of those raising awareness of science, and I’m looking forward to granting Stephen Hawking medals at Starmus science festival to be launched in Tenerife. I hope to see you all there.”

In his speech founder of Starmus festival and leading astrophysicist Garik Israyelian said:

“This award is one of crucial events in the history of science, as it’s also led by century’s world-famous and inspiring scientists, professor Stephen Hawking. Out of sense of respect and great desire, Starmus originated this innovative initiative, giving it the name of one of the greatest scientists in history.”

G.Israyelian also added: “Award for cinematography will be decided upon public voting, the very public will participate in the festival and will shape history.”

By the way, shaping of the medal was completed with Stephen Hawking’s portrait, made by cosmonaut Alexey Leonov.

During the ceremony A.Leonov said:

“It’s rare when a painter reaches success in his life and I’m very proud, that world-famous Stephen Hawking’s portrait has been chosen for this medal. It’s not a sheet of paper, but a visible and touchable object, which will encourage winners. It’s really honor for me.”

“On the other side of the medal Brian Mei is shaped, an image of a cosmonaut and a guitar, which introduces other components of Starmus festival.”

Famous guests of the festival were composer Hans Zimmer, well-known opera singer Sarah Brightman, Dara O’Briain, professor Brian Cox CBE and professor Kip Thorne, as well as representatives of Canarian islands—Mrs. Maria Mendez, Executive Director of tourism department and Mr. Alberto Bernabe, consultant of Tenerife tourism.
