Azerbaijan has two options only: Alexander Iskandaryan

Alexander Iskandaryan, head of Caucasus Institute, political scientist, told reporters today that 2016 was prominent for Karabakh issue and the situation around Karabakh.

“Karabakh issue and Karabakh conflict settlement are different: serious changes haven’t been recorded, it’s been a few years that the Co-Chairs aren’t dealing with the Karabakh issue settlement. They attempt not to settle the conflict, but reduce violence risks. After the April developments they work towards prevention of those incidents. Yet it turns out that violence level is lower now, than prior to April,” the political scientist said, adding that the April escalation was larger than the previous ones, however, it wasn’t a completely new phenomenon. According to him Azerbaijan always increases intensiveness of military operations.

Reflecting to the incidents of late 2016 on Armenia-Azerbaijan border, in particular, in Tavush, he stated that it’s a natural phenomenon, as Azerbaijan doesn’t have other measures to influence over Karabakh conflict, “Azerbaijan has two options only—word and weapon. Words don’t have any value, and it shoots to attach everyone’s attention. It’s necessary for Azerbaijan. If the latter doesn’t command to shoot on the border, nobody will remember it.”

Touching upon the statement issued by OSCE MG, Iskandaryan said that words by Nikolay Bordyuzha, CSTO Secretary General, are among the elements of influencing over Azerbaijan. “They are a reflection to the circumstance that Azerbaijan doesn’t follow the agreements. Certain agreements have been reached after April, and Russia had great participation in it. It isn’t realistic considering that Azerbaijan will pursue maintenance of agreements,” he said adding that each CSTO member country has its own interests and one shouldn’t have hopes with it,

“Artsakh, for instance, isn’t in the focus of Russia’s political agenda, there are more crucial ones. Thus, no one should believe in any political structure.”
