Juncker considers death penalty in Turkey a ‘red line’ in EU talks
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Turkey’s accession talks with the European Union will end if the country reintroduces the death penalty, Politico reported.
In an interview with German newspaper Rheinischen Post published Monday, Juncker said the move “would be the reddest of all red lines.”
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan plans to reintroduce capital punishment and suggested he may call a referendum if parliament rejects his proposal to bring it back. Erdogan suggested reintroducing capital punishment after the 2016 military coup attempt in Turkey.
