Pope himself can’t help Deniz Yücel: Turkish envoy to Vatican
Turkey’s Ambassador to Vatican Mehmet Paçacı announced that even the Pope cannot help Deniz Yücel, the arrested reporter of the German Die Welt newspaper in Turkey, Deutsche Welle reported. The Ambassador said that even “the Pope’s urge on pardoning the reporter won’t be of any use.”
The Turkish envoy also commented on a question regarding limited press freedoms in Turkey, saying it is simply ‘negative propaganda’, which is a result of lobbying of Gulen supporters.
Deniz Yücel, a citizen of both Germany and Turkey, was arrested on February 14. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called him a ‘German spy’. The reporter denied any wrongdoing. Germany has numerously called on Turkey to release the journalist.
