PACE publishes official report on Turkey’s constitutional referendum

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) published the official report over the April 16 constitutional referendum in Turkey, Deutsche Welle reports. The report says fundamental freedoms were restricted during the referendum which was held under the state of emergency.

Dismissals or arrests of thousands of people after the military coup attempt negatively affected the political atmosphere in the country. The PACE recorded that prereferendum campaign was carried out under the circumstances of imbalance of forces. The state TRT TV in its reports gave an obvious preference to the ruling party and President Erdogan.

In general, the media mostly covered ‘yes’ campaign. The report also referred to the Turkish Supreme Election Commission’s decision which declared the unsealed votes as valid while counting the ballots, calling it as illegal.
