2016 showed how fragile are efforts of NK conflict settlement: Report

Independent organization International Crisis Group specialized in analyzing conflicts in different countries and prevention of war situations has published a report on Nagorno Karabakh conflict and Armenian-Azerbaijani relations.

The report notes that political and security conditions that led to escalation in April, 2016 are now more strain. “Since mid-January 2017 tragic events occur as a result of use of heavy artillery and antitank missiles. A notable escalation took place in May, considering the reports on the use of guided missiles in populated areas along the contact line,” the report says.

According to the organization, 2016 showed how fragile are the efforts of NK conflict settlement. “The more the situation escalates, the more international mediation efforts stagnate. Russia is the most influential foreign player, though its role is rather complex,” the report says.
