Gas Supply from Azerbaijan to Europe has no Future: FAAE

Symposium devoted to 160th anniversary of gasification of Slovakia was launched in the period of April 26-27 in Bratislava. Slovakia is among the first countries, where gas extraction and use was implemented. The symposium was organized by International Gas Union in partnership with Oil and Gas Association. Participants of the event were Marosh Shevchovich, European Commission and Commissioner for Energy Union, David Carroll, President of the International Gas Union, Viktor Zubkov, Chairman of the Gazprom Board of Directors, Ashot Grigoryan, Chairman of the Forum of Armenian Associations of Europe (FAAE), heads of world gas companies, ministers and specialists.

Upon the initiative of Ashot Grigoryan, Chairman of FAAE, before the symposium, a special meeting was held between Marosh Shevchovich, European Commission and Commissioner for Energy Union, and Viktor Zubkov, Chairman of the Gazprom Board of Directors, during which a range of wrinkled issues, regarding the gas of Russia and the EU have been touched upon. This was the first meeting, as a result of which new ways of cooperation between them have been obtained. The parties thanked PhD Grigoryan and agreed to hold two more meetings to settle issues related to EU-Russia gas.

All contemporary ways and possibilities of the supply of European gas have been thoroughly discussed. As primary issues construction of Nord-stream-1, Nord-stream-2, East-Ring, South Stream, as well as Russia-Ukraine-Slovakia-EU “Brotherhood” pipelines have been considered.

Current issues referring gas supply from Central Asia and the South Caucasus have been touched upon; issues of Azerbaijani gas supply were covered for the first time, and it was stated, that making use of that possibility is excluded, as the region has appeared in constant unstable condition.

It was also noted, that unleashed war condition in Artsakh totally suspends the issue of providing gas to Europe through Turkey, and Azerbaijan, as a serious actor in the field of gas, is excluded. At the same time, it was stated that gas volumes of the region aren’t sufficient to settle issues of European gas supply. Thus, it may be concluded, that era of Azerbaijani gas export is over. And this is going to be a serious blow to the future of Azerbaijan’s economy.
