Let Zaruhi raise this matter at PACE
On Tuesday when an MP of Heritage faction Zaruhi Postanjyan was presenting the bill on the NKR independence recognition Gagik Jhangiryan from ANC and Shushan Petrosyan from RPA simultaneously asked her whether she knows the opinion of the NKR government regarding the bill, whether they want Armenia to recognize their independence or not. In both cases Postanjyan gave an evasive answer by saying that she is familiar with the standpoint of the society in NKR and they have a positive opinion about that because the NKR has already expressed its opinion about the matter through a referendum and now it’s time for Armenia to recognize the results of the referendum. As Postanjyan wasn’t quite sure about the answer we tried to clarify this matter with the spokesman of the NKR president D. Babayan.
The latter was very angry, “This person doesn’t have any moral right to speak on behalf of the people of NKR because I think that she probably doesn’t even know where NKR is located. I have never seen her within delegations that visited NKR.” According to him the governments of Armenia and NKR are doing everything to achieve international recognition. “But it shouldn’t be Armenia to first recognize NKR. It can be any other state but Armenia. Negotiations are pending and Armenia is a negotiating party. If Armenia recognizes the NKR it will mean that Armenia is ousted from the negotiation process, which can cause unpredictable consequences and provoke a new war. It means that with her provocation this person is helping Azerbaijan to fail the negotiation process.” To our question whether it’s fair to blame a person of provocation who is advocating for the recognition of the NKR.
As a response Babayan said, “I honestly don’t know what her motives are but I know it for a fact that by this step she is harming our sovereignty. If she was really concerned of the NKR she could have raised this matter in the PACE. We are tired of such provocations. We already have enough provocations from Azerbaijan.” At the end of our conversation, Babayan came up with an assumption to prove who would benefit from Postanjyan’s activities. “This person and her party have already several times raised this matter at various occasions and Armenia’s parliament had to turn down these initiatives. The countries, which are for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity claim that Armenian MPs are also against Karabakh’s sovereignty. Now it’s not clear who Postanjyan is working for.”
