Let’s confess together

Russia seemingly declared a war against Ukraine, the Russian troops are added in Crimea every day and at any moment Putin may start using military force in Crimea as promised to the Federal Council of Russia. The international community is trying to prevent the threat of war in a diplomatic way by not only threatening to show military support to Ukraine but also by applying economic and political sanctions against Russia. Although no concrete sanctions have been applied yet but the Russian economy is already reflecting the processes taken place in the world.

The ruble keeps devaluating, Russian big corporations (Gazprom, Rosneft, etc.) have also been devaluated. The stock markets are in panic. These are the results of only the first working day. It is not hard to imagine what would happen to the Russian economy if God forbid Russia starts a war in Crimea. It will cause the collapse of the Russian economy.

These events will have destructive effects on Armenia both in political and economic sense. While the rest of the world criticizes the actions of Russia against sovereign Ukraine, even China surprisingly did so, Armenia continues its ostrich policy. The official Yerevan has not said a word in an official level about the actions in Ukraine besides the statements of the head of the RPA faction in parliament Galust Sahakyan, who said that to him the only president he knows of in Ukraine is Victor Yanukovich.

We hope that silence would be the only and maximum standpoint of Armenia and that hopefully Russia wouldn’t impose Armenia to justify the actions of Russia in Ukraine. The economic effects of this conflict are no less significant on Armenia. By maximally depending on Russia Armenia may directly feel the collapse of the Russian economy. But we can assume that the effects on Armenia may become devastating for already difficult social-economic situation of Armenia. So what does Armenia do to prevent this?

Pretty much nothing. It only does whatever it can to access the Customs Union as soon as possible. Even the initiators of the Customs Union Kazakhstan and Belarus are considering the possibility of deflecting from the Customs Union. Armenia, however, continues its self-arson by following the falling economy of Russia. The interesting thing is that the Armenian politicians have always known when the right time is to lapse the sinking ship, but seems like this is not happening in the case of security of Armenia.
