As soon as there is no settlement to the Abkhazia and South Ossetia issue, Reasoning will always be found for Georgia not to become a NATO member country: Tevan Poghosyan
“A few important issues have been settled at Warsaw NATO Summit. First, NATO is deploying armed forces in Baltic countries and in Poland, which was also planned before. Poland and Baltic countries are becoming full NATO member countries. The verbal veto, which Russia had regarding this issue, was eliminated. Second, the fact, that it has been stated, that Georgia will become a NATO member country, and serious cooperation will be recorded with Ukraine, and here again Russia’s veto was removed regarding the states of post-Soviet space. Main decisions of NATO Summit were in this field: decision was made, not listening to Russia’s positioning,” Stepan Grigoryan, head of the Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional Cooperation (ACGRC), political scientist said, adding if Russia-NATO Council was held prior to Warsaw Summit, maybe it would state that NATO tends to listen to Russia, “However, as they’re going to hold it on July 13, after NATO Summit, obviously, NATO took steps, and currently they’ll discuss it with Russia.”
Alexander Iskandaryan, Director of Caucasus Institute, noted, that this NATO Summit very much resembles Wales NATO Summit held 2 years ago, “Historical decisions were also being touched upon there, however, not a single historical decision was made. What happened in Warsaw, was clear long ago. Georgia and Ukraine were touched upon, however, when Kerry left for Georgia, he stated, that any country may engage with NATO, if it meets the requirements. This means—no. Georgia can’t become a NATO member country at least in the forthcoming 10 years. Two issues will be covered at Russia-NATO Council: issues of Ukraine and Afghanistan.
Tevan Poghosyan, NA MP, Member of Armenian delegation to NATO PA, stated that NATO isn’t the organization, which imports conflicts inside it, and in his words, as soon as there is no settlement to the Abkhazia and South Ossetia issue, always reasoning may be found, that Georgia didn’t become a NATO member country. They also realize the issue rather well.
Touching upon Armenia, the MP stated that Armenia is among the countries with the status of NATO’s best partners. “As the only country in Transcaucasia, which participates in NATO’ peacekeeping mission, also as the only CSTO member country. Already the 5th Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) has been implemented since 2005, program and scopes are wider, than current NATO-Ukraine relations.”
