Many Say, They Support Peaceful Settlement of this Issue, meanwhile They Secretly Hope, that Confrontation will Sharpen and they’ll Gain Some Dividends: Ruben Babayan

“In all cases negotiating is more proper, rather than not negotiating. I think the longer negotiations will last, the more are chances, that they’d come to a common conclusion,” Ruben Babayan, intellectual, director of puppet theatre named after H.Tumanyan, told 168.am, touching upon recent developments.

For him the most crucial issue is prevention of bloodshed. According to R.Babayan, if both sides target around that idea, they’ll be able to find common edges and make a decision.

“It’s very important, that the decision-makers didn’t feel pressure, the oppressors are always in a safer condition and don’t have the moral right to dictate what they should do,” R.Babayan said.

He’s sure, those who aren’t involved in that confrontation, should start building bridges to prevent bloodshed.

“Unfortunately, my socialization of three days and those numerous accusations, addressed to me, led to a regretful conclusion, despite the fact that many express by words, that they support peaceful settlement of this issue, they secretly hope that confrontation will sharpen and they’d be able to gain some dividends. I absolutely have no desire to participate in that dirty game in any way. I’d speak sharper both on the authorities and any acting armed group, however, I think, today it’s not the proper moment,” the intellectual stated.

To the question who he means by saying they attempt to “gain some dividends,” R.Babayan replied, that he doesn’t want to give any names at the moment,

“I think, not all political powers are sincere in their assessments. I think, it’s once again important, that the society didn’t become a toy in the hands of the authorities, the society should dictate to the political powers what it wants, and not move upon their wish.”

According to R.Babayan, it’s difficult to say, have we more approached to the peaceful settlement of the issue or more alienated since that day?

“Maybe one should at least edify to be able to judge what’s going on inside. From the viewpoint of social assessments, I think, day by day the crack of the society is expanding, which is inadmissible. We start to treat one another with hostility. The idea, which doesn’t correspond to ours is perceived as betrayal or disposition of an enemy—this is very dangerous. Intolerance is not principality, it’s a lack of brains, when you don’t think of implications,” the intellectual said.

He stated that he supports real consolidation,

“Frequently that consolidation is being introduced this way, “unite around me”…meanwhile it’s not consolidation. Consolidation is when we attempt to understand one another being concerned only with one issue—progress of our country. Maybe we’ll be mistaken on that way, we’ll have to make a step backward to review our positions, however, only in that sense we should be able to listen to one another. Currently we shout and it seems to us, who shouts louder, he is right. In fact, the one is right who attempts to listen.”
