European Parliament adopts proposal on freezing Turkey’s EU membership talks
The European Parliament adopted the proposal on freezing Turkey’s EU membership talks, Anadolu reports. 479 MEPs voted in favor of the proposal, 37 were against. 107 MEPs abstained. Although this is non-binding proposal, it is an important message to the EU and the leadership of the Union’s member states.
It is expected Turkey’s membership issue will be discussed at EU leaders’ upcoming summit in December. The EU lawmakers called on suspending the EU-Turkey talks on membership during the “EU-Turkey relations” session in the European Parliament on November 22.
During the session the political factions recorded regression on democracy, human rights and law in Turkey. Turkish President Erdogan issued a statement on the voting by stating that the results of it don’t have any significance for them.
