Outbreak of War on Karabakh-Azerbaijan Contact Line is more than Realistic: David Shahnazaryan

“We need to understand, that we appeared in a situation, when outbreak of war on Karabakh-Azerbaijan contact line is more than realistic, as what’s being implemented by Russia-Azerbaijan alliance, really leads to that,” David Shahnazaryan, Senior Analyst at Regional Studies Center, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (1992-1995), former Head of National Security Service (1994-1995), told at today’s discussion on “Post-Warsaw NATO Summit: Implications for Armenia.”

David Shahnazaryan stated that he didn’t anticipate, that Warsaw NATO Summit will become a historical event, as a few weeks ago there were no preconditions to make such suppositions. However, in his qualification, it was a historical summit with its results.

He made an interesting observation, stating that Warsaw Summit was held in the venue, where the Warsaw Pact has been signed.

The speaker enumerated a few activities initiated by Russia’s president prior to the Summit directed to prevention of the decisions to be made during the summit.

“It turned out that NATO member countries don’t believe in Russia’s words. It became obvious that it’s of utmost importance for NATO that the so-called Eastern wing has been touched upon, however, by saying Eastern wing NATO means the territory from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea, including Georgia.”

He also highlighted importance of the summit results for Ukraine and Georgia.

However, in his conviction, Russia’s political role and country’s president Vladimir Putin should draw three conclusions from NATO summit.

“Those three conclusions resemble the three principles of thermodynamics. First, it’s impossible to win, second, it’s impossible not to lose, and third, it’s impossible to leave the game either. What do we observe as a result? Russia goes to sharpening in Syria, in south-eastern Ukraine and attempts to go to sharpening in our region, already touching upon supply of armaments to Azerbaijan on NK zone,” David Shahnazaryan said.

According to him, it should be rather positively assessed, that this time Armenia also participated in Warsaw NATO Summit on a high level, like previously in Wales.

“On account of the developments existent in Russia-Armenia relations, the claims existent from Russia, I have concerns, that Russia will attempt to block Armenia-NATO relations. Hopefully, they won’t succeed. We need to understand that we appeared in a situation, when the outbreak of war is more than realistic on Karabakh-Azerbaijan contact line, as what’s going on by Russia-Azerbaijan alliance really leads to that. Russia will attempt to destabilize the region, the purpose is clear: the so-called Russian peacekeeping mission.”
