Angela Merkel meets Saudi leaders without headscarf

Angela Merkel took a stand against the Saudi regime by refusing to wear a headscarf when she traveled to meet King Salman on Sunday.

She made this move just weeks after Theresa May was praised for declining to cover her head when she went for talks in Saudi Arabia, the Telegraph reported.

The country enforces a strict dress code for women in public; they are told to wear a full-length robe and cover their hair.

Saudi Arabia enforces a conservative dress code in public, requiring women to wear a full-length robe and cover their hair. Women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia and cannot take paid employment or travel abroad without permission from a male guardian.

Angela Merkel has recently said the burqa is  “not acceptable in our country”. The German Chancellor has called for the item of clothing to be banned wherever possible.
