Ivan Volynkin comments on expansion of Russian military base in Armenia

The Russian military base in Armenia aims at ensuring the country’s security and it can be expanded based on the mutual military agreement, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Armenia Ivan Volynkin told reporters in the Victory Park on May 9, adding that he didn’t hear about creation of second Russian military base in Armenia.

“If there is an expansion, it will happen with the agreement of the two sides,” the Ambassador said. Asked what is his opinion on Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement who said the Russian military base in Gyumri can also ght against the Islamic State, the Ambassador said: “The Minister knows better than the Ambassador. But I think that the Russian military base is to ensure Armenia’s safety.”

As for the Victory Holiday, Volynkin said the Soviet Union has paid a very high price for this victory, and now it is even difficult to talk about it. He congratulated everyone and wished peace.
