AI and Human Rights: Are We Losing Our Rights? | Interview with Prof. George Ulrich
168.am, in collaboration with the Global Campus of Human Rights (GCHR), has launched a new interview series addressing pressing human rights issues.
In the first episode, we explore the impact of artificial intelligence on human rights with Professor George Ulrich, Academic Director of the Global Campus of Human Rights, based in Venice, Italy.
“AI has the potential to advance human rights objectives — from the right to health, by improving the quality of healthcare services and enhancing diagnostic accuracy, to the right to education, and many other areas. We expect AI to benefit human rights significantly. At GCHR, we are focusing on this through a major initiative called ‘AI for Human Rights,’” Prof. Ulrich explained.

However, he also highlighted the risks and challenges AI poses: “There are serious concerns about discrimination and bias embedded in algorithms. AI can be used for mass surveillance, which threatens privacy rights. For example, deep fakes are clear violations of privacy, and AI-driven social media tools can be exploited for bullying and harassment, directly harming individuals.”
