Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has secured the necessary majority in Friday’s election, defeating his conservative rival, Ebrahim Raisi, according to the country’s Interior Minister, RT reports.
“It’s over, Rouhani is the winner,” the source said on condition of anonymity. Rouhani won 21.6 million votes in Friday’s hard-fought contest, compared to 14 million for Raisi, with 37 million votes counted, the source said, adding about four million more votes were still to be tallied.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally ordered his security detail to attack the peaceful protesters outside the Turkish Ambassador’s residence in Washington DC. The anti-terrorist unit of Istanbul’s law enforcement carried out six separate simultaneous raids in the city. According to the Turkish state-run Anadolu news agency, Istanbul police arrested five people and detained 12 foreigners suspected in having ties with the Islamic State.
