Sacked FBI director Comey ‘won’t spend time on why he was fired’

Former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired Tuesday by US President Donald Trump, on Wednesday sent a letter to select FBI staff, friends and agents. “I have long believed that a President can fire an FBI Director for any reason, or for no reason at all. I’m not going to spend time on the decision or the way it was executed.

U.S. President Donald Trump ignited a political firestorm on Tuesday by firing FBI Director James Comey, who had been leading an investigation into the Trump 2016 presidential campaign’s possible collusion with Russia to inuence the election outcome.

The Republican president said he fired Comey over his handling of an election-year email scandal involving thenDemocratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The move stunned Washington and raised suspicions among Democrats and others that the White House was trying to blunt the FBI probe involving Russia.

White House officials denied allegations that there was any political motive in the move by Trump, who took office on January 20.
