Guinness World Record and World Recognition: Wings of Tatev Cable Car Turns 14
The “Wings of Tatev” cable car celebrates its 14th anniversary. Since the launch of the project in 2010, it has welcomed more than 1,300,000 people. The “Wings of Tatev” has once again been nominated for the prestigious international tourism award, World Travel Awards 2024, in the category of “World’s Leading Cable Car Ride 2024” for the third time. The project has already won this nomination twice in 2023 and 2021. Voting takes place on the official website of the award and will last until October 20, 2024.
Guinness World Record Holder
The “Wings of Tatev” opens up previously inaccessible corners of Armenia to travelers and increases the country’s recognition: it is the world’s longest passenger reversible aerial tramway. It entered the Guinness Book of Records not only because of its length – 5,752 meters – but also as the world’s only engineering structure of this scale built in just 10 months. The cable car was realized by the Austrian-Swiss company Doppelmayr/Garaventa, a leader in the field of ropeway construction.
The “Wings of Tatev” — the driver of regional development
The aerial tramway is a part of “Tatev Gateway” complex, a non-profit project, all profits from which are directed to the restoration of Tatev Monastery and the development of the local community. The “Wings of Tatev” aerial tramway was built within the framework of the “Tatev Revival” project, thanks to which 12 km of road infrastructure has been created in Tatev, schools and kindergartens have been equipped and renovated. In 2023, a community center was opened in the village of Halidzor. Particular attention was paid to preserving the ecological diversity of the region: 9.5 hectares of forest have been saved, and optimization of water supply has been improved in rural settlements of Tatev and Svarants.
To support cultural life, more than 20 events have been held, including national and regional festivals. Every 5th guest of the country includes a cable car in their route, thanks to which the tourist flow to the Syunik region has increased 17 times compared to 2010.
“Travel Oscar”
The World Travel Awards is often called the “Travel Oscar”. It was established in 1993 and since then has served as a benchmark for excellence in the travel and hospitality industry. The “Wings of Tatev” has been recognized as “World’s Leading Cable Car Ride” globally twice; the first award was granted to Armenia in 2021, and the second one in 2023. This year, the project is also nominated for the “World’s Leading Cable Car Ride”.

The “Wings of Tatev” cable car is already 14 years old, and all this time our team has put great efforts into constantly improving the quality of service, creating truly exceptional experiences for guests. We celebrate this important date with special trepidation and hope to be recognized again in the global tourism arena. Securing this prestigious award once again will not only bring global recognition to Armenia as a unique tourist destination, but will also allow us to introduce even more tourists to the breathtaking nature and rich cultural heritage of Tatev and Syunik,” said Mariia Butenko, Director of Impulse Business Management, which manages the cable car.
The “Wings of Tatev” project is part of “Tatev Revival program”, initiated by Ruben Vardanyan and Veronika Zonabend.
