NKR Conflict won’t be Settled through Negotiations: Arman Navasardyan

Arman Navasardyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, touching upon the Sargsyan-Aliyev forthcoming meeting, stressed that it’s crucial that there was a document on the negotiation table.

“Azerbaijan raises the issue of returning territories. Of course, a compromising step should be taken, however, one thing is obvious: until the issue of Karabakh’s status quo isn’t settled, any compromise shouldn’t be made, as it may have irreversible implications. Stepanakert may be simply put under attack. Besides, 1994-1995 ceasefire agreements should be kept in the center of attention. NKR conflict won’t be settled through negotiations. However, only by patriotic slogans we won’t reach settlement as well,” he said.

According to the Ambassador Karabakh’s participation in negotiations should be provided, which, in his words, is being touched upon, however, we don’t observe it yet, “In any case, ceasefire seems to succeed. We should do everything to use the pause and settle military and economic issues.”

To the question of 168.am what opinion he had of air defense agreement, by which Armenia will lose its air independence, the Ambassador replied, “Is that good if our skies are open and we are shelled or be closed and not shelled? I don’t support Russia. We need to be clever.”

Passing on to Armenia-Iran relations, he stated, that elimination of visas has two sides, “If we don’t open for drugs and other harming phenomena, everything will work well. Iran’s positive attitude towards us is welcomed, and we may become a transit country.”

Asked how he imagined Armenia’s becoming a transit country, when Iran, Azerbaijan and Georgia have already concluded an agreement on a new route, the Ambassador replied, “Fortunately, Iran is the state with so many reserves and possibilities, that  it’s ready to create another additional road.”
