Armenia ranked 79th in World Press Freedom Index

Reporters Without Borders published the 2017 World Press Freedom Index. Armenia is ranked 79th among 180 countries. Turkey is ranked 155th (-4), Azerbaijan is ranked 162nd (+1), Georgia is ranked 64th, Iran is 165th, Russia 148th and the US is ranked 43rd. The index says print media in Armenia is diverse and polarized, investigative journalism is developing online, however there is poor pluralism in TV media.

The index also mentions the July 2016 police brutality against reporters in Yerevan. The best countries in the index are ranked as follows – Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Netherlands, Costa Rica, Switzerland, Jamaica, Belgium and Iceland. The worst countries in the index are – China, Syria, Turkmenistan, Eritrea and North Korea.
